“Twilight” villain Cam Gigandet has been cast opposite Leighton Meester in Screen Gems’ “The Roommate.”

Psychological thriller centers on a deranged college freshman who becomes obsessed with her new roommate. Gigandet will play the boyfriend of Meester’s character.

Christian E. Christiansen is helming from a Sonny Mallhi screenplay. Roy Lee and Doug Davison will produce “Roommate” through their Vertigo Entertainment banner.

Screen Gems is eyeing a May start date.

Gigandet’s credits include “The Unborn” and “Never Back Down.”

With the ink just dry on Leighton Meester’s deal to star in the upcoming thriller The Roommate, I hear she’s already looking to film a second movie when this season’s Gossip Girl finishes shooting later this spring.

A source tells me that Meester is the frontrunner to headline CBS Films’ Beastly, a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Zac Efron was reportedly once up to play Beastly’s male lead, a 17-year-old looking for love who is turned into a monster by a fellow classmate.

“Leighton really wants to do it,” the source says. “They’re trying to figure out how she could do the two movies before she starts shooting another season of Gossip Girl.” • Read full story…

Impossibly cute Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester has signed to star in the Sony Screen Gems thriller, The Roommate, which sounds a bit like a college revamp of Single White Female.

Meester, who plays the bitchy Blair on the hit show, will star as Sara, a freshman student who is assigned a new roommate, Rebecca, only to find said roommate becoming dangerously obsessed with her, targeting her loved ones and generally going all doolally.

OK, so we were wrong – it’s a lot like Single White Female. In fact, if you called it Single White Roommate, nobody would bat an eyelid. Might even pick up a few curious moviegoers… • Read full story…
