A ways away from the Constance Billard School: After three-plus seasons of Upper East Side bitchery on TV’s Gossip Girl, Meester has let her purty drawl come to the fore in Shana Feste’s feature Country Strong, playing the aw-shucks, boots-and-mini ingénue to Gwyneth Paltrow’s aging, Mindy-McCready-rap-sheeted superstar. “I read the script and I thought it had an All About Eve kind of feel,” Meester says. “She just wants to be close to her idol and be best friends. She never gets that. It’s sad. It’s an endearing thing about her that she’s not a total bitch—she does mean well.” And further broadening the portfolio with … lead roles in three new films out this year: a travel comedy called Monte Carlo, a campus thriller called The Roommate, and The Oranges, an indie drama in which her romantic interest is played by House’s Hugh Laurie, 27 years her senior. “They have a real connection and rapport. And Hugh’s a really good kisser,” Meester says. “Just kidding—that’s such a delicate subject.”

Thanks to her magnetic screen presence and weekly must-watch TV show, it’s never been hard to watch Leighton Meester.  But thanks to two back-to-back movies - Country Strong, out now, and The Roommate, premiering February 4 – the Florida native has quickly catapulted from TV star to Hollywood’s new hot property.

She’s also our February cover girl – after all, it is The Love Month, and we’re totally head-over-heels for this New York-based actress.

Leighton Meester on Blair Waldorf:
Blair is…. I don’t know what she is… I have to enter a completely foreign body to sympathize with Blair and her decisions.  You know, Blair grew up very savvy, well-educated, and lonely.  I think her mother is not the most supportive person and… Blair is very competitive and conniving, and it obviously comes, usually, from a very human place, but she makes decisions that I would never make.

Leighton Meester on her Country Strong character, Chiles Stanton:
She is so scared of people thinking of her as this ignorant, vapid, pretty face, and you know, I can totally understand where she’s coming from because, especially if you come from Dallas Texas, you’re a beauty queen – you don’t play the guitar, you’re writing seemingly meaningless pop songs.  All that I can relate to, totally.  It’s sad and sweet at the same time.”

Minka Kelly on Leighton Meester during the filming of The Roommate:
She worked with psychologists; she really studied the illness of the character, so much that at times on set i was a little concerned whether or not she was there because she scared me so much!  The look in her eye was so surreal I was in awe at how much she committed to it.

Leighton Meester on Her Family and Friends:
I like to be judged by my family and friends because they know me.  If they think I’m being an asshole I’d like them to tell me, but if I’m fat or something I’m like, “Well, so?  OK?  Great!”  It doesn’t even matter; it’s like, “What if I am fat? Does it matter?”… I’m a grown woman and sometimes, I might be a little fat, you know!  Am I alone there?  Not really!

“The way I become friends with somebody is a slow process. You can’t just spill your guts and tell them everything about yourself and expect them to listen and understand you because you don’t know them. It’s the same thing with a relationship.”

Love Hurts
“I think you have to know how you feel when you’re sad and it’s healthy to mourn if a relationship ends. You should go through a period where you experience that feeling instead of fighting against it all the time and saying ‘No I want to be happy’ because that’s not healthy. As much as I don’t want sad or bad things to happen to me, it’s given me a lot of material for my work, so it’s good

She’s With the Band
“I’m working with a band right now, doing a lot of acoustic music through singing and writing. It’s really fun and fulfilling. It’s an expression of what I have in my life and what I’m going through, or what I have gone through, and of course, it’s mostly about love or relationships. The ups and downs that come along, which I think are universal.”

On Filming Country Strong…
“It was very inspiring being around all these people who make really good music and write amazing songs that tell stories. There’s a lot of really talented people in Nashville and the music they make has been around forever. They are real musicians, it’s not just a computer.”

Bag Lady
“A big bag is nice to travel with and to go to set with because I need my book or script and my wallet, and I like bringing my hand lotion and hand sanitizer because I’m a little OCD. Then an iPod and headphones. I like to be able to also stuff a scarf in there too, so when I’m on a flight I can use it as a little blanket.”

Here’s what the 24-year-old Gossip Girl and Country Strong star had to share with the mag:

On if she still feels having a boyfriend isn’t a priority: “I would say the same thing today as well. [But] I think that the importance of love is really strong for me in my life, whether it’s a guy or a friend or just my puppy. I think love changes you over time, and whether you have good or bad experiences, you always grow and learn from it.”
