Spending a ton on cosmetics may be a way of life for Gossip Girl‘s queen bee Blair Waldorf, but that’s just the character shopping. In real life, actress Leighton Meester says she’s all about the bargains when she’s buying beauty products. “Look, I’m a South Florida girl — if you need mascara, you go to Walgreens,”

Meester recently told StyleList. “One of the joys of my job is being able to try all different products, but if I can spend a lot less on something, I’d rather do that.” The Herbal Essences spokesmodel saves her pennies by stocking up on some of her favorite drugstore beauty must-haves, including CoverGirl lip stains, L’Oreal Naturale Mascara and one her ultimate favorites: cocoa butter.

“It’s 99 cents! I love it,” she raved. But regardless of what she’s using when getting dolled up, she always keeps one style icon in mind. “Oh, Bette Davis. Those lips,” she gushed. “You know how you’re supposed to choose between playing up your eyes or your lips? I always choose lips. I love the drama.” Tell us: Where do you buy cosmetics?

There are certain celebrities that are rarely caught with a hair out of place and are known for their effortless style. Leighton Meester, actress, musician, and trend-setter is definitely one of those ladies. I joined Meester (wearing a gorgeous Missoni dress) and celebrity hairstylist and Herbal Essences spokesperson Charles Baker Strahan to chat about new products and how we can get hair like Leighton’s. I left with some Gossip Girl scoop, Leighton’s favorite spring trends, and her hair secrets.

First, fill me in on this new product line!
Leighton Meester: I love the new products, I love the new formulations, and I love it because it’s pretty much all I have to do. I’m pretty much low maintenance when it comes to my hair, but on a regular basis it’s great to just have to shampoo and condition your hair and have a great shiny base to work with. It’s nice to have a beauty regimen that you can stick to and I can stick to this. I love Hello Hydration for my hair because it gets all kinds of heat styling all the time and it’s good to add as much moisture as possible. I also love Long Term Relationship because it’s great to mend your hair. • Read full story »

The movie, due July 1, offers teenage girls an alternative to the third Transformers movie this summer and a familiar face in Disney Channel star Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), who plays Paris-bound high school grad Grace.

The Texas teen is let down when she finds out that the adventure she researched and booked for herself and best friend Emma (Katie Cassidy) isn’t quite as grand as she had imagined.

Their dream vacation is unwittingly saved by British socialite Cordelia Winthrop Scott, an impeccably dressed brat who is a doppelgänger for Grace. After a case of mistaken identity and armed with Cordelia’s invitation to a glitzy gala in Monte Carlo, the girls head south to live it up for a week, wearing fancy clothes and meeting dashing men. • Read full story »

One of the most common complaints about Gossip Girl — and, in fact, just about every hot television show that features adults pretending to be teenagers — is that the writers pair off the main characters in every possible love permutation available to them. Because they’re only dealing with a finite number of primary cast members, if a show lasts more than a couple of years, eventually everyone will have dated everyone else.

The writers of Gossip Girl swiftly exhausted most pairings in the first few seasons: Blair and Nate, Nate and Serena, Serena and Dan, Dan and Vanessa, Vanessa and Nate, Nate and Jenny, Jenny and Chuck, and most important, Chuck and Blair. Oftentimes these matches were so rushed that they seemed laughable — Jenny used to hate Chuck because he tried to rape her in the first episode, and then she offered up her virginity to him? And what, exactly, were Vanessa and Nate supposed to have in common?

Left out of that sexual daisy chain for the first three seasons was a love match between Blair and Dan. The circumstances seemed to preclude such a pairing: Even though Dan’s father married into the life of a billionaire house-husband, the Upper East Side crew always viewed him as “Lonelyboy,” the outsider. And Blair has basically been preoccupied with Chuck for several years now. It almost felt like the writers were being respectful of viewers’ credulity by not even going near that situation.

And then the last episode before the hiatus happened. Dan and Blair, in the very last moment of the show, exchanged a fierce kiss. What was strange about it was that it felt, well, right. Somehow, over the course of several episodes, the writers had built a plotline that made the most unbelievable possible pairing on the show (well, other than Dorota and Eric) believable. The key to this feat was the “over the course of several episodes” part. Gossip Girl often suffers from ADD when it comes to characters and plotlines. A life-threatening story line could come up in one episode and be gone the next. But in the fourth season, the driving plots (that Lily put Ben in jail to protect her daughter, that Bass Industries is in trouble) have remained in steady arcs since the very first episodes. By allowing sprouts of story to spring naturally from these roots, even though the lovable ridiculousness of the show never stopped, the frustrating schizophrenia almost completely did.

Sure, viewers knew what the writers were up to when they started having Dan and Blair hang out (and, that they won’t necessarily be hanging out for long). But it was believable in the way it happened — they are the two smartest and best-educated characters on the show. They’re the most snobby, really, at least when it comes to art, literature, and film. And like everyone else, they’re impossibly attractive. Since they live in a world where both only seem to have half a dozen real friends (if that), is it so crazy they’d end up together? Until two months ago, the answer to that question would have been yes. Not so any longer.

That Dan Humphrey sure gets around. He’s managed to fling with BFF Vanessa and step-sister Serena, and these days he’s getting busy with the Queen B herself, Blair. When MTV News caught up with the “Gossip Girl” star at Cosmopolitan magazine’s 2011 Fun Fearless Males party, Penn Badgley shared what it’s like to work so intimately with Miss Leighton Meester.

“It was actually the most fun I had had on the show in a while,” Penn dished about his latest on-screen romance. “It was something new for my character, and I was having fun with the rapport, and I think my dialogue benefited from it. It was actually a lot of fun to work with Leighton. I hadn’t much. We were like the only two who had never really interacted.”

Well it seems they’ve quickly gone from 0 to 60 in the interacting department, and Penn admitted he’s not complaining. “It was great We all get along pretty impeccably, even after four years,” he shared. “I mean there are ups and downs, as there are in anything. It’s great. I’ve actually really enjoyed working with her.”

With Dan and Blair busy being Dair, what does that mean for his past ladies, like Serena and Vanessa? Well, he says, you’ll never believe what happens next. “I don’t know how much I can give away,” he teased. “It doesn’t end the way you think it does. I can’t say much.”
