Impossibly cute Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester has signed to star in the Sony Screen Gems thriller, The Roommate, which sounds a bit like a college revamp of Single White Female.

Meester, who plays the bitchy Blair on the hit show, will star as Sara, a freshman student who is assigned a new roommate, Rebecca, only to find said roommate becoming dangerously obsessed with her, targeting her loved ones and generally going all doolally.

OK, so we were wrong – it’s a lot like Single White Female. In fact, if you called it Single White Roommate, nobody would bat an eyelid. Might even pick up a few curious moviegoers…Anyway, the wonderfully-named Christian E. Christiansen will direct the movie, which was written by Sonny Mallhi. But we’re intrigued to see how Meester will fare on the big screen.

So far her movie career has consisted of a string of forgettable and little-seen fare – can Single White R… sorry, The Roommate see her break out as a movie star? Or will the actress who nabs the as-yet uncast Rebecca role receive all the plaudits? Oh, it’s so tense already – we can hardly bear to look!
